Angelie Rasmussen, student at Utah Valley University
We look up with hope at our floating, high school graduation caps.
As we watch them fall down, we’re hit the daunting truth—we don’t really know much about what comes next. Besides learning how to grocery shop and balance new finances on our own, we have a whole other world high school didn’t prepare us much for—our inner world.
According to the ADAA, 85% of college students said they felt overwhelmed during the year. 30% said their stress levels were hurting their grades.
41.6% rated anxiety as the greatest concern among their peers.
I could carry on about the statistics all day, but they all point to one main principle: freshman students—and all of us, really—need some help and insight on what’s going on in our minds, hearts, bodies, and relationships.
With that in mind, here’s what I would tell my freshman-year self before she walked through that university door:
1. It’s going to be an emotional roller-coaster—and that’s okay.
2. It’s up to you.
3. Sit down and figure out where you want to be at the end of these four years.
4. Your real life is more important than your Insta feed.
5. You’re going to have to make some of the biggest decisions of your life.
6. Take care of yourself.
7. You’re going to learn a lot about yourself: Take note.
8. Learn how to communicate and love (face-to-face)!!!
9. You can make a difference every day.
10. Finally, there is a friend to tell you this before you start your first day.
